An elegant winter wedding with a fabulous view

Kate and Chris's December wedding took place at a dramatic, stark-white Chelsea loft space with spectacular views of the Hudson River, the Statue of Liberty, lower Manhattan and New Jersey. The décor played on a winter-white theme, with white birch, willows and beautiful stones accenting the clean, modern lines of the open space and white flowers gracing the tables. After nightfall, candles provided a warm, dancing glow.

 

The interfaith ceremony incorporated Jewish elements (important to the bride's family) and Catholic traditions (important to the groom's), as well as elements that hued to no tradition at all: The couple walked down the aisle to an instrumental version of Sigur Ros' "Hoppipola," played by the eight-piece funk band that would later have their guests up and dancing. "The music in the ceremony was completely ours," says Kate, who wore a tea-length dress that made her feel a bit like Audrey Hepburn.

 

The reception, too, reflected their style. Following a cocktail hour with passed hors d'oeuvres, rather than a formal sit-down dinner, guests were treated to flights of whimsical hors d'oeuvres, including mini burgers and fries as well as salmon prepared three ways. The couple also brought in a Washington, DC, sushi chef with whom they're friends. And for dessert? Ice cream sandwiches with homemade cookies -- a specific request of the cookie-loving groom. "It was a mix of kitschy and traditional," says Kate. "And people are still talking about it. We have a friend who constantly refers to the fried chicken we served as the best thing he's ever eaten."

 

The bar was the bride's dad's domain. "He's very particular about his drinks. He loves scotch. And for his friends, drinks are very important," says Kate. He handed Naturally Delicious a specific list of brands, complemented by the groom's preferred beers and wine provided by the groom's brother, a California winemaker. "We wanted everyone to feel included, to feel like they'd been thought of," says Kate.
