A dazzling wedding in an unexpected place
Scott grew up on Long Island. Suzy's from a small town in Missouri. "We came in with different senses of what a wedding was," says Suzy. Ultimately, they agreed on a perfect plan: a dazzling party in an unexpected place, something exciting and different for his family, who were used to more traditional country-club affairs, and for hers, many of whom would be traveling to New York for the first time. The wedding was held in the Tobacco Warehouse, a raw space in DUMBO right under the Brooklyn Bridge: four brick walls and a cement floor, no roof, but a spectacular view of the river, the Manhattan skyline and -- on the late June night of their wedding -- a clear, star-filled sky. The reception was a deluxe cocktail party, with a full bar, festive red and white sangria, passed hors d'oeuvres and a variety of specialty stations, which arrived in waves throughout the night. "We didn't want anything that required a fork or a knife," Suzy says. The food was plentiful and delicious, and creatively whimsical: The mini burgers with fries in paper cones were a big hit. And the Southern set appreciated the mini BBQ sandwiches -- down-home comfort food in the middle of an urban oasis. Seating was a mix of high and low tables -- and a mod lounge area, with white leather benches and light-up cubes: an idea suggested by their event planner at Naturally Delicious and the perfect place for guests to hang out. "We wanted people to dance, walk around, go out and see the water and the bridge, meet new people," says Suzy. Naturally Delicious helped the couple arrange table linens and furniture, even the Porta Potties. The preparation paid off. "We had everyone we love in one place at one time," says Suzy. "There may never be another opportunity for us to bring all these people together: my uncle who grew up on a farm in Missouri and Scott's parents, who grew up in Brooklyn and Queens." At the end of the evening, after a dessert tasting bar that included ice cream, cookies, and a tower of cupcakes, as the last beats of funk music floated into the Brooklyn night, the guests reluctantly drifted off the dance floor. "Everything was amazing," says Suzy, thinking back. "It was a dream."
